Buenas Dias from Punta Allen in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere where our Ascension Bay Expedition is in full swing. After arriving in Cancun, we made the 4-hour drive (most of which is on dirt roads) down to Punta Allen and settled into our home for 7 nights, Ascension Bay Lodge.
We woke up the next morning to high winds and scattered, but heavy rain. With six full days in Punta Allen, and 4 days planned on the boats with guides, we took the first day off to get ready. After a delicious homemade breakfast, we went to the town baseball field to practice our casts with the help of Ascension Bay Lodge owner, Dany. We have a wide degree of experience, but everyone was able to walk away with some new pointers to help them prepare for the afternoon activity. After lunch, we loaded up two boats and took a quick ride to Paraiso Flatt for some walk-wade fishing. Despite deeper than normal water that made spotting the usually tailing fish difficult it was a perfect way to get ready for the next few days on the boats.
The fishing on the boats gets better every day. Flatt's fishing relies heavily on our ability to see fish, and our ability to see fish depends heavily on the weather. The first day brought torrential rain, but that did not stop everyone from catching some bonefish. From that point on the weather continues to get better every day, which is perfect, because so does our casting. Yesterday brought the first landed Permit of the trip, and I would be surprised if it is the last.
Stay tuned for the final update to see how we do.
