Ascension Bay Expedition 23 Recap

Hola from Punta Allen!

We have been impressed with the kids skill and determination through the trip. Over the past few days the kids have had dozens of shots casting to the elusive permit and have not given up targeting them. In the mean time the group has landed many more bonefish and some even landed more massive migratory tarpon. Some boats opted for catching large snappers and barracuda from the nearby reef on spinning gear to have prepared back at the lodge either fried or in ceviche. Never less, the fish that will never be forgotten are being caught here left and right.

Following our days fishing we come home to fresh juice and homemade nachos appetizers before enjoying our evening activity and exercise after . The kids have been really getting into our competitive volleyball games. The kitchen staff has been cooking wonderful local meals that ensure a great night sleep after a long day fishing.

On our second to last day of the trip we teamed up with a local leader for our service project to help decide where the community needed assistance the most. The kids showed up ready to work hard despite the heat of the overhead Mexican sun. After hours of work the team had cleaned, landscaped, and organized the local park to a great degree of improvement. We could see the gratitude in the locals faces as they thanked us as we worked. Preserving and improving the local communities where we fish is at the core of Lillard Fly Fishing, and the kids did just that.

After that the group challenged the local guides into a game of beach soccer in the local stadium. To many peoples surprise we left victorious which made our lunch time tacos that much more enjoyable. For our last evening we were dropped off at a flat to wade and sight fish in ankle deep water for bonefish and permit under the falling sun. Punta Allen never fails to offer breathtaking sights with its endless beautiful scenery. Our last meal of yummy seafood was bittersweet as none of us felt ready to leave the beautiful town and Ascension Bay Lodge.

It is crazy to think that our wonderful trip has come to an end. The past week of fishing and enjoying life will be something that the kids and guides alike will be sharing stories about forever. This group was very special and meshed better than we could have asked for. We hope to see them on expeditions in the near future. Until then, tight lines and have a great summer.

Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions was started in 2010 as a graduate thesis for my Master's Degree in Environmental Conservation Education at NYU. The operating premise was simple - by coupling amazing wilderness fly fishing camps for teens with environmental education and service learning we can help inspire future generations of fly fishing conservationists. We have been growing our unique list of trips and experiences ever since.

When it comes to choosing a summer program for your teen the options are endless. For the teen who loves to fish, be outside, and has a strong sense of adventure we have made the choice easy. We are the leader in teen fly fishing adventures and are dedicated to providing the best backcountry fly fishing experience with opportunities for teens to engage in leadership training, community service, and backcountry camping.

Sincerely,
