Ascension Bay Expedition - Update 1

The journey to Ascension Bay is never an easy one—planes, trains, and automobiles defined the day. After landing, we were picked up by shuttles and driven to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere, where we boarded panga boats that would take us the rest of the way to our final destination: the world-renowned Ascension Bay Lodge.

It was a long day in transit, but the experience was unforgettable. We drove through the vibrant streets of Tulum, then glided through winding mangroves, immersed in the breathtaking beauty of the biosphere. The salty wind stung our faces—and even claimed a few hats—as we finally arrived in Punta Allen.

Suddenly, it all made sense. Every leg of the journey had led us here, to one of the most secluded and stunning places on earth. And I didn’t even get to the best part—the saltwater game fish. Just the chance to catch a permit, tarpon, or bonefish is enough to make most anglers salivate, but the opportunity to chase all three in a single trip? That’s the holy grail of flats fishing. This is the kind of place where legends are made. Where the water is so clear you can see tails flashing from a hundred feet away, and where every cast holds the promise of something unforgettable. Ascension Bay isn’t just a destination—it’s a pilgrimage for those who dream of fish.

And oh, the lodge isn’t too shabby either. After rinsing off the salt and sun, we were welcomed with cold sodas, warm smiles, and a dinner that rivaled the day’s beauty—a perfectly grilled Mahi-Mahi. The journey had been long, but as we sat around the table, telling stories and getting excited for the days ahead, it already felt like we’d arrived at something far greater than just a fishing lodge. The energy was palpable; the uncertainty of what was to come—a chance at a permit, a glimpse of silver tarpon rolling in the shallows, the whisper of bonefish tails in skinny water—buzzed through the room. Out here, nothing is guaranteed. But that’s what makes it magic. The promise of the hunt, the camaraderie, the wild beauty—it all blends into something unforgettable.

Lastly, I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Cole Hauswirth, and I have the privilege of serving as the trip director for both the Thorofare and Ascension Expeditions. I was raised in San Francisco, where I spent much of my early life exploring California’s diverse fisheries. Since the inception of the Thorofare trip, I’ve had the good fortune to participate every year—it remains one of the most meaningful and memorable parts of my summer. I recently graduated cum laude from Colorado College with a degree in Economics and Classics. I was honored to receive the Robert William Kaye Award, presented annually to the outstanding senior in Business, Economics, and Society. This summer marks my fourth year as a leader with Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions and my ninth year with the program, including my time as a camper. My passion for fly fishing and conservation was first sparked during those early experiences and has since become a guiding force in my life. I’m excited to share these passions with campers in the hope of inspiring a lasting connection to wild places and a deep appreciation for the natural world. When I’m not fishing, I enjoy skiing, backpacking, and playing golf. I am also a certified Wilderness First Responder.

Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions was started in 2010 as a graduate thesis for my Master's Degree in Environmental Conservation Education at NYU. The operating premise was simple - by coupling amazing wilderness fly fishing camps for teens with environmental education and service learning we can help inspire future generations of fly fishing conservationists. We have been growing our unique list of trips and experiences ever since.

When it comes to choosing a summer program for your teen the options are endless. For the teen who loves to fish, be outside, and has a strong sense of adventure we have made the choice easy. We are the leader in teen fly fishing adventures and are dedicated to providing the best backcountry fly fishing experience with opportunities for teens to engage in leadership training, community service, and backcountry camping.

Sincerely,
