Ascension Bay Expedition - Update 3

Hi all,

Our final day in Ascension Bay was a fitting end to an unforgettable week. We went DIY, walking the flats and exploring a tidal lagoon tucked back in the mangroves, rods in hand and eyes peeled for movement. No guides, no boats—just us and the fish. It was the kind of day that asked for patience, focus, and a little bit of luck.

We found bonefish cruising the edges of the lagoon, their shadows shifting like ghosts in the current. Some of us hooked up, managing to land fish on our own terms—sight-fishing, wading barefoot through warm water, making the shot and sealing the deal. Others didn’t quite connect, but still shared in the thrill of the hunt: spotting tails, making good casts, feeling the pulse of the flats.

That’s what made the day so rewarding. Flats fishing without a guide is no easy feat—it’s one of the most challenging ways to approach this sport. But when it clicks, even once, it proves something to yourself. You can do this. You earned it.

And that was the theme of the whole trip. Not everyone caught the exact fish they came here dreaming about—whether it was a permit, a tarpon, or that one perfect bonefish. But everyone had an awesome time. Everyone left with stories, with moments of magic, and with a deeper understanding of what makes this place so special.

That’s the heart of flats fishing. It doesn’t always give you what you want. But it always gives you something—enough to hook you for life. Enough to bring you back.

Sunburned, tired, and grinning ear to ear, we packed up knowing we’d experienced something rare. Ascension Bay reminded us why we chase these fish, and more importantly, why we chase these moments. Until next time.

Tight Lines,

Cole and the LFFE Team

Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions was started in 2010 as a graduate thesis for my Master's Degree in Environmental Conservation Education at NYU. The operating premise was simple - by coupling amazing wilderness fly fishing camps for teens with environmental education and service learning we can help inspire future generations of fly fishing conservationists. We have been growing our unique list of trips and experiences ever since.

When it comes to choosing a summer program for your teen the options are endless. For the teen who loves to fish, be outside, and has a strong sense of adventure we have made the choice easy.
