Maine to Mass Expedition - update 1

Greetings and welcome to the blog for the 2023 Maine to Massachusetts trip! We're writing from Aziscoos Valley Campground on the border of Maine and New Hampshire, just a few miles from Canada, and on the banks of the mighty Magalloway river. The Magalloway is famous among Mainers for its population of Brook trout, landlocked salmon, and scenery and the boys are excited to take advantage. Despite a rainy forecast for the next day or two, the crew has their heads up high as they get to know one another — with quite a few returning students, as well as some new students that are certainly bringing the right energy, it’s shaping up to be a fantastic group.

After picking up the last guy from Boston Logan last night, we began our 4 ½ hour drive north, stopping for pizza along the way to satisfy some post-travel appetites. As it got darker while the roads skinnied and the mountains grew bigger, the excitement in the vans was tangible. We arrived at camp in a brief gap in the rain, set up tents, and had a little introduction to the trip where we went over rules, the general itinerary, and set goals for what each student wants to accomplish during this trip. As the rain slowly picked back up again, we all retreated to our tents, excited for breakfast, a big day of (re)introduction to fishing, and hopefully even a little sunshine tomorrow.

In the next few days, we will be heading toward the historic Lakewood Camps, which is only accessible by boat and will provide our anglers with some of the best Brook trout fishing in the world at the head of the Rapid River. We will spend two nights there before heading back towards Massachusetts and the massive pike that are held in its waters. This group is looking great, with eagerness to help and, of course, fish! Everyone is already sharing laughs like they’ve known each other for years.

Our next update will come following the conclusion of our stay at Lakewood, certainly with lots of photos of those big Brookies we came all the way to Maine for.

Tight lines until then!

Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions was started in 2010 as a graduate thesis for my Master's Degree in Environmental Conservation Education at NYU. The operating premise was simple - by coupling amazing wilderness fly fishing camps for teens with environmental education and service learning we can help inspire future generations of fly fishing conservationists. We have been growing our unique list of trips and experiences ever since.

When it comes to choosing a summer program for your teen the options are endless. For the teen who loves to fish, be outside, and has a strong sense of adventure we have made the choice easy. We are the leader in teen fly fishing adventures and are dedicated to providing the best backcountry fly fishing experience with opportunities for teens to engage in leadership training, community service, and backcountry camping.

Sincerely,
