Montana Road Trip Adventure - Update 4

Hi all,

It’s hard to believe, but we’ve reached the end of an amazing journey. This is our final update from what has been an unforgettable adventure through some of Montana’s most beautiful waters and wild places. Over the past 10 days, we’ve floated legendary rivers, explored the backcountry, and pushed ourselves in ways that brought out the best in everyone.

We closed out the trip in true Montana style—floating the iconic Madison River one last time. With big skies overhead and a steady current beneath us, it was the perfect send-off. Whether casting from the boat, sharing stories with their guide, or simply soaking in the scenery, the group made the most of every minute. The day felt less like the end of a trip and more like a celebration of everything we’d accomplished together. It was a time to reflect, to laugh, and to savor just how far we’d come in only a matter of days.

That celebration continued with our final banquet—a well-earned steak dinner capped off with root beer floats that disappeared fast. Around the table, plates were piled high and the energy was pure joy. Campers swapped favorite memories, laughed over inside jokes, and gave well-deserved shoutouts to their guides and to each other. From fishing tales to trail stories, the night was filled with a sense of pride and connection. It was a meal—and a moment—that felt like a true victory lap.

What stood out most over these 10 days wasn’t just the trout or the towering mountains—it was the way this group came together. We saw campers step up, step out of their comfort zones, and support one another in meaningful ways. Whether someone was rowing for the first time, learning to tie a fly, or hiking into remote waters, every challenge became an opportunity for growth—and every day brought us closer as a team. It was inspiring to witness campers encouraging one another, taking risks, and forming bonds that will last well beyond this trip.

As we head home with tired legs, sun-kissed skin, and memories we’ll carry for a long time, we want to say thank you—to each camper for showing up fully, to the guides who shared their knowledge, and to everyone back home who made this adventure possible.

Until next time—

Tight lines,
Zach, Coleman, Max, and Luke

Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions was started in 2010 as a graduate thesis for my Master's Degree in Environmental Conservation Education at NYU. The operating premise was simple - by coupling amazing wilderness fly fishing camps for teens with environmental education and service learning we can help inspire future generations of fly fishing conservationists. We have been growing our unique list of trips and experiences ever since.

When it comes to choosing a summer program for your teen the options are endless. For the teen who loves to fish, be outside, and has a strong sense of adventure we have made the choice easy. We are the leader in teen fly fishing adventures and are dedicated to providing the best backcountry fly fishing experience with opportunities for teens to engage in leadership training, community service, and backcountry camping.

Sincerely,
