Hello Families,
Greetings from No Name Lodge! We're three days into our Puerto Rico adventure, and it's been an outstanding start to what is shaping up to be a memorable week. With seven campers, four exceptional guides, and plenty of enthusiasm, the group has settled into the rhythm of life on the flats.
Each morning begins early, with a 5:30 a.m. wake-up call followed by a hearty breakfast prepared by our wonderful house mom, Sue. By 6:00, the guides arrive, and we head out in pairs to take advantage of the cool morning conditions and the best fishing of the day.
Our first morning greeted us with rolling tarpon throughout the bay — a spectacular sight and an exciting way to begin the trip. As expected, there was a brief adjustment period as everyone transitioned from trout fishing instincts to saltwater techniques. Learning to strip-set instead of trout-set is a rite of passage for every fly angler venturing into the salt, and the campers quickly adapted. Before long, fish were being hooked, and everyone experienced the unforgettable excitement of watching a tarpon track a fly, eat, explode into the air, and put on the acrobatic display that has made the species legendary among fly anglers.
Afternoons have been dedicated to chasing permit on the flats. Often described as the ultimate challenge in saltwater fly fishing, permit demand patience, precision, and perseverance. Every opportunity has been a valuable learning experience, and the group has embraced the challenge with impressive focus and determination.
Back at the lodge, the days wind down with well-earned meals, plenty of stories from the water, and a healthy dose of friendly competition. What started as a casual game of Monopoly evolved into an intense two-night marathon complete with dramatic victories, heartbreaking defeats, and lots of laughter. Card games and board games have become the perfect complement to long days spent on the water.
As impressive as the fishing has been, one of the highlights of the week has been watching the growth of the group. Each camper has made noticeable strides in casting, fish-fighting skills, and overall confidence in the saltwater environment. Just as importantly, they've developed a deeper appreciation for this remarkable fishery and the teamwork, patience, and persistence that successful flats fishing requires.
The camaraderie among the group has been equally rewarding to watch. The campers have come together as a cohesive team, encouraging one another on the water, celebrating each other's successes, and enjoying every moment off the water as well.
Looking ahead, the tides are lining up beautifully for the next two days, giving us excellent opportunities to continue pursuing permit while also spending more time with Puerto Rico's incredible tarpon. We're excited to see what the remainder of the week has in store.
