Colorado Expedition - Update 2

Hey Families!

We just wrapped up the first backcountry leg of the trip today -- it was a huge success! We celebrated in true LFFE fashion—with a gas station snack run, hot showers, pool time, clean laundry, and a pizza dinner. After four nights without the comforts of civilization, all of that was much appreciated. The boys (and the guides!) were more than ready to kick back, recharge, and regroup before heading out again.

The past few days were full of incredible fishing and epic views. We hooked into some beautiful fish—brightly colored brook trout in a small, meandering stream, and big, native cutthroat trout in a stunning alpine lake. These fish weren’t easy to come by. It took some serious hiking, grit, and determination to reach them, but the payoff was well worth it. That’s the beauty of this trip—the scenery, the solitude, and the satisfaction of earning each fish make every step count. We spent our evening at some stellar campsites, enjoying talking, laughing, and sharing stories from the day.

Along the way, we’ve seen everything from mule deer and elk to soaring hawks and even a curious marmot who tried to inspect a backpack. The boys are learning to read the water, identify bugs, tie stronger knots, and hike with purpose. They're dialing in their systems, both for fishing and backpacking, getting more efficient at packing their bags and setting of tents. It’s been a great blend of challenge and reward, and their confidence is clearly growing each day.

We’ll head back into the backcountry on July 5th. Starting at the North Inlet Trailhead, we’ll hike several miles to a campsite tucked near a series of alpine lakes known for holding big cutthroat. Before then, we’re looking forward to a well-earned rest day on the 4th of July. We plan to fire up the grill for some classic hot dogs and hamburgers and, if the schedule allows, maybe even catch a local parade or fireworks show.

The group has really started to click—there’s plenty of laughter, shared stories, and good vibes all around. Everyone is having a pretty darn good time, and we’re excited for what’s still ahead.

Until next time!

Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions was started in 2010 as a graduate thesis for my Master's Degree in Environmental Conservation Education at NYU. The operating premise was simple - by coupling amazing wilderness fly fishing camps for teens with environmental education and service learning we can help inspire future generations of fly fishing conservationists. We have been growing our unique list of trips and experiences ever since.

When it comes to choosing a summer program for your teen the options are endless. For the teen who loves to fish, be outside, and has a strong sense of adventure we have made the choice easy. We are the leader in teen fly fishing adventures and are dedicated to providing the best backcountry fly fishing experience with opportunities for teens to engage in leadership training, community service, and backcountry camping.

Sincerely,
