Colorado Expedition - Update 4

Hello all!

The final days of the Rocky Mountain Expedition have been amazing, with most of the kids catching their biggest fish of the trip in that time. The fishing around our campsite at Pumphouse, near Kremmling, has been solid, and the evening dry fly fishing has been exceptional. Everybody had a great time with the guides of Cutthroat Anglers, and they are looking forward to a day of relaxation before heading back home.

Due to low water conditions, we were not able to fish Pumphouse last year, but this year was a different story. Our first night there, we realized that the evening hatch was going to be something special - caddis, stoneflies, and mayflies all on the water. The fish were waiting eagerly and we were able to land tons of these fish around dusk.

The following day we had our service project where we cleaned up Pumphouse Recreation Area, a popular rafting/fishing boat ramp. We collected many bags of trash that would have otherwise entered the Colorado River. The guides and boaters on the river thanked us for what we did, and we got some good karma for the fishing ahead of us. That evening we had another amazing hatch and caught tons of nice fish on the surface. We got some rest to get ready for our day with the guides ahead.

The next day we woke up and went fishing with the guides of Cutthroat Anglers. Some people went wade fishing and the rest went float fishing. The wade fishermen ended up catching the biggest fish of the trip, with a 20” brown getting caught! Everyone had a great time, and we also caught another evening hatch afterwards. We made a fire and had s’mores to celebrate an amazing trip.

We woke up and headed to Silverthorne, CO the next day. We headed to our campsite on Lake Dillon named Prospector, and we all cleaned the gear. Then we went to town and stopped by Cutthroat Anglers, before heading to the Recreation Center to soak in the pool and get clean and ready to go home. We are having our Banquet Dinner tonight, and then we will head back to Prospector to get some rest before an early airport day. This trip flew by and I’m excited to share all the photos with you! Thanks for sending great kids - they're a blast to be around and eager to get better at fishing. Hard to beat!

Thanks,

The guides and the guys

Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions was started in 2010 as a graduate thesis for my Master's Degree in Environmental Conservation Education at NYU. The operating premise was simple - by coupling amazing wilderness fly fishing camps for teens with environmental education and service learning we can help inspire future generations of fly fishing conservationists. We have been growing our unique list of trips and experiences ever since.

When it comes to choosing a summer program for your teen the options are endless. For the teen who loves to fish, be outside, and has a strong sense of adventure we have made the choice easy. We are the leader in teen fly fishing adventures and are dedicated to providing the best backcountry fly fishing experience with opportunities for teens to engage in leadership training, community service, and backcountry camping.

Sincerely,
