Greetings from Big Sky Country,
We've made our triumphant return from the backcountry, and the boys brought every bit of the wilderness back with them in their grins.
Our final days at Heart Lake were nothing short of legendary. The fishing was absolutely on fire! Everyone in the group caught fish, and we mean everyone, with some genuinely impressive cutthroat and arctic grayling coming to hand. These are waters that serious anglers plan trips around for years, and our guys walked out having lived it. There's a particular kind of quiet confidence that settles into a young man after he's stood in a backcountry lake far from any road and out-fished expectations — and we saw it on every face making the trek out.
Last night we eased back into civilization the right way: burgers at Ruby Creek Reservoir under one of those Montana sunsets that makes you understand why they call it Big Sky. It was the perfect decompression — tired legs, full bellies, the kind of sky that earns its own reputation.
This morning brought a genuine treat. The boys had the chance to meet Dan Delekta, owner of the legendary Beartooth Fly Shop and a truly respected voice in the fly fishing world. Dan made a point of telling us how struck he was by how polite and respectful the group was. High praise from someone who's seen a lot of anglers come through. The conversation turned to something important: the role this generation will play in the future of fly fishing and conservation. This really highlights the mission of LFFE — getting these boys involved in the outdoors is what builds our future conservationists and creates the voices that speak out for our wildlife and wild lands. This was a truly special experience for all of us, and we were very grateful to meet Mr. Delekta.
From there we rolled out to the upper Madison, one of the most famous stretches of trout water in the country, for a riverside lunch. As we write this, lines are in the water and lips are being ripped on the upper Madison. The evening brings dinner and a night at basecamp, because tomorrow — the Fourth of July — we're heading to Yellowstone for an overnight float. We can't wait to spend our Fourth ripping lips and sleeping on the banks of the Yellowstone River.
We want to say something about this group, because it deserves to be said plainly: these young men have become a real team. They look out for each other, they show up for each other, and they've brought a spirit to every day that has made this trip genuinely special to guide. We are proud to be out here with them.
