Hi families,
I'm currently sitting at Heart Lake writing this, watching all the boys wrangle some beautiful alpine cutties! While we've only been here a few hours, the fishing has been phenomenal and we only expect it to get better. The lake is a turquoise surrounded by tall conifers. There's something about watching fish after fish come to the net in a setting this stunning that makes you pinch yourself a little — it's hard to believe this is real life.
Yesterday we camped on Copper Creek, about 10 minutes from the trailhead. While the fishing wasn't amazing, the boys persevered and got on some decent fish. That kind of patience and persistence is exactly what backcountry fishing is all about, and this group showed plenty of both. We then packed up all our backcountry gear for today and made our way down river in the van with the grill. Once we got camp set up, we fired up some chicken quesadillas and fished until sunset — a perfect way to cap the evening before a big day on the trail.
After a good breakfast, we got on the trail today around 11am and the boys did phenomenal! The hike in is no joke, and we are all so proud of them sticking through our first and toughest day of hiking. Packs were heavy, the miles were real, and not a single complaint was heard. That says a lot about the character of this group.
We have now made it to our first stop and fish have been hitting the net since our very first cast. Tomorrow we will continue deeper into the backcountry to our next alpine lake, and anticipation is already building for what's waiting for us there.
All of your boys have been so amazing. There is something really special about this group. It already feels as if we've been together for weeks — the kind of easy camaraderie that usually takes much longer to develop. We can't wait for our next couple of days in the backcountry and everything that follows after.
