Montana Road Trip Expedition I - Update 3

Hi families!

Ruby River Reflections & What’s Ahead
The Montana Road Trip crew just wrapped up a few incredible days camping and fishing along the Ruby River — and what a stretch it’s been. Tucked away in one of Montana’s hidden gems, we’ve had a chance to slow down, soak up some epic scenery, and get into some seriously fun water. The Ruby gave us everything we hoped for: clear, cold water, tight cutbanks, and enough eager trout to keep everyone grinning (and sometimes yelling) from across the bends.

In between casting sessions and riverside hangs, the group’s been finding a rhythm out here — waking up with the sun, enjoying good food, and spending full days exploring the river on foot. It's been a ton of fun seeing the group get tighter, listening to guys tell stories from the day, and watching friendships grow. On the fishing front, whether it's sight-fishing along meadow stretches or sneaking into tighter pocket water, everyone’s been putting their skills to the test and showing some serious growth.
The vibe? High. Spirits? Higher.

Looking ahead, the adventure continues.
Tomorrow, we’re heading toward the mighty Yellowstone River, with plans to float and fish the big water. Fishing the Yellowstone River is a classic Montana experience, it's wide and full of endless trout-holding structure. From big dries to deep nymph rigs, the variety of water will keep all of these guys engaged and trying new things. We'll also sneak into a few smaller creek systems nearby — dialing into some more technical water and adding variety to our week. It’s shaping up to be the perfect mix of big water excitement and intimate creek sneaking.

Today, we’re shifting gears a bit — in a meaningful way.
We’ll be working with the Salmonfly Project as part of a new, longterm partnership with LFFE. The mission is to collect bug samples in to support ongoing research efforts to keep Montana’s river ecosystems healthy and thriving. It’s an awesome opportunity to give back to the waters that give us so much — and a chance to better understand the insects that drive this whole fishing game. The crew is fired up to get hands-on with the science side of fly fishing.

Montana’s delivering on all fronts: good fish, great weather, even better company, and a deeper connection to the landscapes we’re lucky to explore.
More to come as we head east toward the Yellowstone…

Until next time —
Tight lines,
Zach, Coleman, Watson, and Hunter

Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions was started in 2010 as a graduate thesis for my Master's Degree in Environmental Conservation Education at NYU. The operating premise was simple - by coupling amazing wilderness fly fishing camps for teens with environmental education and service learning we can help inspire future generations of fly fishing conservationists. We have been growing our unique list of trips and experiences ever since.

When it comes to choosing a summer program for your teen the options are endless. For the teen who loves to fish, be outside, and has a strong sense of adventure we have made the choice easy. We are the leader in teen fly fishing adventures and are dedicated to providing the best backcountry fly fishing experience with opportunities for teens to engage in leadership training, community service, and backcountry camping.

Sincerely,
