Montana Road Trip Expedition II - Update 2

Hey Families!

We just wrapped up a successful couple of days fishing the Ruby River, where everyone was able to find some large, healthy fish. The river treated us well, offering up plenty of exciting moments, some beautifully colored trout, and a few personal bests along the way. The crew has been putting in the time and effort, and it’s paying off.

Now we’ve made our way to Ruby Creek Campground, where we’re setting up base right on the world-famous Madison River. Over the next few days, we’ll be mixing things up with float trips and walk/wade sessions to make the most of this legendary fishery. Spirits are high, rods are dialed in, and confidence is building—we’re hoping to time things just right and keep the momentum going.

The weather has been kind to us—mostly sunny days, cool mornings, and just enough breeze to keep the bugs at bay. Evenings at camp have been filled with stories from the river, laughter around the fire, and hearty meals to refuel after long, rewarding days on the water. There’s something truly special about watching the sun dip behind the mountains with a plate of hot food and a satisfied group of anglers all around.

We’ve also carved out time for knot-tying practice, fly swaps, and plenty of games—both competitive and downright silly. Whether it’s can jam, frisbee, or a casting contest at dusk, the crew is connecting in all the right ways.

The group’s skills have noticeably leveled up—drift control, mending, and fly selection are becoming second nature. It’s been great to watch campers support one another: offering encouragement, sharing tips, and celebrating each other’s success. The shared stoke after someone lands a big fish (or even just sticks a tricky cast) is one of the best parts of the trip.

Next up, we’re headed toward Yellowstone to chase new water and new adventures. The team is fired up to explore what’s next—from geysers and grizzlies to more big water and wild fish. If the first part of the trip is any indication, we’ve got plenty more unforgettable days ahead.

Until next time,

Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions was started in 2010 as a graduate thesis for my Master's Degree in Environmental Conservation Education at NYU. The operating premise was simple - by coupling amazing wilderness fly fishing camps for teens with environmental education and service learning we can help inspire future generations of fly fishing conservationists. We have been growing our unique list of trips and experiences ever since.

When it comes to choosing a summer program for your teen the options are endless. For the teen who loves to fish, be outside, and has a strong sense of adventure we have made the choice easy. We are the leader in teen fly fishing adventures and are dedicated to providing the best backcountry fly fishing experience with opportunities for teens to engage in leadership training, community service, and backcountry camping.

Sincerely,
